Latency jumps around, causing constant annoying jitter

I don't know the correct answer. To answer this question, need to know how exactly your internet is connected. You'll find the simplest advice here.

Troubleshooting the connection

1. Restart your router.
This can sometimes fix problems, and is simple to try.

2. If you're using wifi, try using a network cable instead.
Wifi is not always suitable for latency sensitive applications such as online gaming.

3. If you're using a network cable, try using a different network cable and/or plugging the cable into a different port on your router.
Cables and ports sometimes become faulty. Replacing a network cable is one of the cheaper hardware faults to fix.

4. Make sure Path of Exile is allowed through your firewall.
The client does not listen on incoming ports - port forwarding is not required. If you have an outgoing firewall, allow your Path of Exile client through it.

If none of the above has helped, you may need to contact your ISP and have them help troubleshoot your connection.

Ethernet cable. As above, I started out on WiFi but it was truly horrid. On Ethernet it's a lot better but still not really playable.

I had just wanted to check, as it was possible you had switched back and the reported figures against the first hop were quite awful.

What does that mean to a layman, how do I solve the problem?

a) Too much traffic in the neighborhood, contact the ISP.
b) Too much traffic on my connection, contact my landlord.
c) A problem with the cable modem, contact the ISP.
d) A problem with the router, contact the router manufacturer.

It isn't A.

We don't sufficiently understand the specifics of your situation to begin attempting to rule out the others. For example - if you are comfortable answering this - do you personally have a router in your own home, or is there a shared router being used by multiple families?

If you saying you produced this WinMTR log while your desktop or laptop is connected via Eithernet cable directly to the router, then the possibilities are;

  • Your desktop or laptop is the problem.
  • The Ethernet cable is the problem.
  • The router is the problem.

Thanks. It's not 1 nor 3 either, both were thoroughly tested.

I have the source cable modem and source router both right next to my computer.

5ft cable from cable connection in the wall to cable modem.
2ft ethernet cable from cable modem to router.
5ft ethernet cable from router to my desktop.

I don't know how many people the landlord shared the password with. It's at least 3 legitimate people total on the connection, with suspicions that an additional family may be using it next door. Suspicion not because I know how this stuff works, but because the issue only occurs during primetime, which was my only layman's clue to a possible non-technical cause.

That's correct.

Thanks, good to know.

It's unlikely my desktop, since why would it only occur during primetime? Also before moving to this location at the start of this thread, I had no internet issues with the exact same setup.

I tried multiple cables, all had exactly the same issue, and all these cables have had no issues for years.
