Have no problems selling or buying my stuff, and the market has all I need. Doesn't really seem dead to me.

Sure, the league is easy and rewarding, which make people "done" with their objectives fast - and some only play for certain objectives and then they're gone. Which is OK, playing hardcore for 4 months is bad.
