"Rate limit" spam from a live search
|
I had a live search running for nightmare maps and each new item notification popped up a new "You have been rate limited for 55 seconds" warning, covering the whole screen. I now have a "your account is rate-limited" popup without an indication how long I'll need to wait. It is unclear what happened, but I was certainly not submitting or refreshing the page while the live search was active.

Hi there!
Can you please try clearing your browser cache and disabling any extensions you may have active? Sometimes this issue can be caused by a 3rd party tool on the browser or by spamming buttons. Additionally, I'd suggest to turn off a VPN if you are using one :) If you are still experiencing issues, please contact us at support@grindinggear.com |

I did this prior to posting. As a follow up I was on a live search in the background (game focused) I received a Rate Limit popup and the live search disconnected. Scrolling the page with a mouse wheel triggers network requests as new items come into view. Because I'm already "rate limited" scrolling triggers a new rate limit warning popup for each new item that scrolls into range.
![]() Here is a video scrolling *up* the page to already rendered results where you can see network requests being triggered within the trade site's own code, resulting in many 429 (too many requests / rate limit http status) responses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTS8wyx0NxI Last edited by Orcasauce#3672 on Mar 30, 2026, 12:04:00 AM

Just happened to me again. I had the following live search running all day without issue, until someone suddenly spam listed 50+ items all at once, which caused the browser app to make many network requests in rapid succession causing a rate limit to be applied. It'd be great if live search results for an infrequently noisy search to trigger this because it impacts other people on my network.

Following up again, this reproduced almost instantly on a completely fresh install of Microsoft Edge, a browser I don't use otherwise. I reached out to the support email but they continue suggesting I clear my cookies not present in a fresh browser install, disable a VPN I don't use, or make fewer than a single page load.
This was originally posted as a bug report and was seemingly moved to help and information. |
