Playing flicker strike seriously ruined all other "melee" for me in POE1
|
I've always been a "melee enjoyer" in ARPGs back to the days of OG Diablo 2 in the year 2000, transitioning to D3, and then to POE1 a few years ago.
When I got "seriously" into endgame POE1 in settlers (the melee buff patch) it was as a DS ambidex gladiator. Seeing DPS numbers near 10 mil with good survivability felt pretty good, but over time in that patch I realized that the DPS is irrelevant if I'm manually walking up to each target, making sure my mouse is in the right place, clicking in the right place, repeating the process, all while getting pummeled by countless spell and/or ground effects. By end of settlers I gave up on "true melee" strike skills like DS and went into cleave style like reave with big impale, attack speed, crit. I continued that in mercenaries league with an assasin and had great success. But I still had to stand still to attack, target in a general direction, which adds up to hundreds of potential extra clicks in a short span of time. It was a similar situation with a slammer build except I also had to do part-time warcry piano staring at my action bar. Which then took me to cyclone builds where I realized that attacking while moving while doing decent DPS (requiring more serious div investment than "true melee" strike builds) is even better than having a big cleave like reave. Then finally now in keepers and this patch (only play standard now) I finally got serious into flicker strike after seeing all the crazy gameplay videos and hype...and I can't imagine how I played any other "melee" skill previously in POE1. You have lazy instant targeting couple with lazy instant movement and some baseline cleave assuming the general strike prerequisite of "tribal fury" anoint. For example, I recently made an EB flicker of power inquisitor topping around 10 mil DPS with buffs. Super fun, but getting boring, so I sat on the wiki for a while looking at melee skills and playing around with POB numbers. For example, I can use my same gear with minimal changes and get around 25 mil DPS as a heavy strike version, but what does this mean? By the time my heavy strike version targets a pack in a map room my flicker version will have cleared that room AND be already killing the next one (or adjacent corridor). The effective heavy strike DPS in this situation might as well be 100k. So what I'm saying is in all my rambling is...is flicker strike just the inevitable destination of a "melee enjoyer" in POE1? Every enemy in POE1 endgame moves super fast, there's millions of them, they all do insane damage, there is zero visual clarity, and standing around for seconds at a time is a recipe for sure death even with multiple defensive layers. Flicker strike covers all the bases to get around these issues in mapping. It feels like all the other "melee" skills in POE1 endgame are unplayable, relatively speaking.
