Essence of Desolation in helmet with Abyssal Jewel Socketed not compatible or wording issue

The wording on the Essence of Desolation states as follows:

Helmet: +6 to Level of Socketed Gems while there is a single Gem Socketed in this Item

It specifically says single socketed GEM, implying that a JEWEL would not invalidate the mod.

However, when socketing an abyssal jewel alongside a single gem in a helmet, the gem loses the +6 levels from the modifier.

There are other instances in the game where similar wording is not invalidated by abyssal jewels being socketed in items, such as the Aul bloodline node Precursor's Release which lets you run an abyssal gem in your boots and still benefit from the action speed effect.

This suggests that the modifier is bugged when combined with socketed abyssal gems in helmets and needs to be fixed.

If in fact this is the intended behaviour (I hope not), then please can the wording on the essence be amended to clarify.

The helmet in question I have found this out is as follows, whereby socketing a level 20 strength support gem makes it level 33 without an abyssal jewel socketed, and it drops to level 27 with an abyssal jewel socketed:
