Misleading wording on shield mastery
|
The shield mastery that reads "+1% to Critical Strike Multiplier per 10 Maximum Energy Shield on Shield" does not grant its bonus when combined with The Apostate which reads "Gain Maximum Life instead of Maximum Energy Shield from equipped Armour items".
This would be very reasonable if the mastery said "+1% to Critical Strike Multiplier per 10 Maximum Energy Shield gained from equipped Shield" or something. With the current wording, even though the character doesn't gain the energy shield on the shield, it's still ON the item, and therefore should grant the critical strike multiplier bonus. You are interpreting it incorrectly: when you gain something INSTEAD of something else, the original thing no longer exists for purposes of additional mechanics that are based on it.
In this case, the mod says you get Crit Multi per 10 energy shield.....but you no longer have energy shield, you have life instead. This is an absolute change. That item has been "rewritten" to be life instead of ES. Perhaps it would be great if the game illustrated this directly on the item itself, but the wording on The Apostate DOES make this clear regardless. Consider things like Zealot's Oath and other similar transformations. The reason why all these things work and make sense is because it prevents double dipping. The wording is specifically chosen to illustrate exactly what it means. Starting anew....with PoE 2 Last edited by cowmoo275#3095 on Mar 18, 2026, 4:17:34 PM

" Well, no :p to all the above |

So this body also bricks shield skills that partly scale from ES "+0.1% to Off Hand Critical Strike Chance per 10 Maximum Energy Shield on Shield" (Divine Blast)? I agree that it's not an expected outcome. Becasue, as we know, such stats look at the value listed on the item, and global stuff doesn't affect it. Speaking of
"this wording would suggest the opposite. Things that increase defences/ES from equipped shield (e.g. Arcane Guarding) would affect gained-from-the-shield value. I think it's just The Apostate being an exception rather than the mastery wording issues. |
|
" Exactly, because The Apostate is an absolute change, which are few and far between in this game. But Apostate is worded exactly the way that it is worded precisely because of how stupid powerful it is. Keywords here: "instead of"... Starting anew....with PoE 2

The wording on the mastery is dubious indeed. Because all it says is that it will look at the ES on the shield. Even if that ES is converted to life, it is still ES on the armour item that is shown.
We miss you, bald man.

" That's only a visual thing though....you just wrote exactly why its clear. "Even if that ES is converted to life".....it WAS converted, regardless of what is shown. The issue is not the wording: if there is an issue here, its that the visual on gear is not updated to change ES to Life. Starting anew....with PoE 2

" It was converted via the mechanic and NOT physically on the shield. The shield still clearly displays that it has ES. Is this so hard for you to comprehend? In fact, it's so damn confusing that even the big brains behind POB didn't catch it and crit multi is still added despite having Apostate on. We miss you, bald man.
