Subject: Feedback on League Mechanic Design Flaws: Affliction & Performance Friction (Part 2)
|
To the Grinding Gear Games Team,
Continuing our series on league mechanic design flaws, let’s turn our attention to Affliction. 1. The Performance Catastrophe: Particle Overload The single biggest barrier to enjoying Affliction isn’t the difficulty; it’s the performance hit caused by excessive particle effects from the sheer number of towers. My experience can be summarized in four stages: my GPU spins up, screams, starts smoking, and finally catches fire. My grandmother threatened to become a firefighter if I didn’t stop playing this “damn game.” Ironically, my largest financial investment in Path of Exile wasn’t for cosmetics or stash tabs—it was $600 USD on a new PC just to handle the frame rate drops in this league. 2. Lack of Strategic Depth & The Rise of AFK Builds Currently, Affliction lacks the strategic depth expected of a Tower Defense mode. The meta has devolved into two unsatisfying extremes: Spamming Towers: Players simply build as many towers as possible without meaningful decision-making. AFK Exploitation: The mechanic heavily favors specific AFK (Away From Keyboard) builds, such as those utilizing Animated Weapon with Phantasmal Support or other summoner variants that can clear the map while the player does nothing. This removes player agency and reduces a potentially engaging mini-game to a passive income source. 3. Hostility Towards Melee Builds Once again, Melee builds are left behind. Playing melee in Affliction feels absurd. I feel like a chimpanzee, screaming and frantically jumping from left to right, top to bottom。 4. Proposed Solutions for Improvement To fix these issues, I propose the following changes: Remote Construction UI: Add a control panel or UI overlay that allows players to place and manage towers without needing to physically walk to each location. This would drastically improve flow and reduce unnecessary movement. Quality Over Quantity: Increase the power and utility of individual towers while reducing the total cap on tower numbers. This would force players to make strategic placement decisions rather than just spamming the map, restoring the Tower Defense essence. Clear Telegraphing for Immunities: Implement distinct visual indicators (telegraphing) for enemies that are immune to specific tower types. Currently, it’s guesswork; players need to know why a tower isn’t working to adapt their strategy. Aside from these critical points, the rest of the league mechanics function adequately. However, fixing these core issues is essential for the health of future tower-defense-style leagues. Thank you for listening to the community’s concerns.
